Tasting Notes

Tasting Note

The 2014 Yates Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is a densely colored and intensely flavored wine with the hallmark features of mountain fruit. Aromas of dark blackberry, wild berry patch and ripe plum are pronounced on the nose and ring true on the palate. The barrel notes of caramel toast add intrigue to the juicy fruit core. The hillside fruit is reflected in the intense flavor and significant yet ripe and well-integrated tannin structure. The wine is well-balanced with bright fruit, smooth tannins and good acidity.

Scores & Accolades

    Wine Advocate

"Coming from a single vineyard on Mount Veeder, very close to the Sonoma County line, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Yates Vineyard has an inky black purple color and youthfully reticent nose of red and black currants, blackberries and mulberries with hints of cigar boxes, pencil lead, bay leaves, yeast extract and fertile loam. The medium to full-bodied palate is seriously intense and tightly wound with layers of earth, black and red fruit flavors plus a solid backbone of firm, ripe, grainy tannins, finishing with plenty of depth and expression. What a beauty!" - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, October 2017

"This is so dialed-in with so much intense blackberries, fresh herbs and juicy tannins. Very focused and precise. Full body, soft tannins and a wonderful texture. Excellent. Tiny production. Give it three to five years of bottle age." - James Suckling, May 2017

Winemaking

Winemaking

After being hand harvested and hand sorted upon arrival at the winery, the grapes were fermented on the skins for 12-15 days. The wine was then gently pressed, racked and aged for 19 months in 100% French oak (92% new). Winemaker Harry Hansen made just 12 barrels of this fine and expressive Cabernet Sauvignon.

Harry Hansen - Winemaker

Director of Winemaking Harry Hansen was raised in nearby Sonoma County. “One of my earliest memories of wine was the gallon jug of red wine that we always had at home. I would go with my father to a local winery, maybe in Kenwood or Healdsburg, to refill that jug and chit-chat with the winery proprietors. The aromas of those wines were always something attractive, somehow mysterious, but always memorable.”
Harry joined Sterling Vineyards and relocated to Napa Valley just before the 2011 Harvest. “The opportunity to join such a respected Napa Valley winery is exciting and a fantastic next step in my winemaking career. Sterling Vineyards is making some wonderful wines, and I look forward to taking that next step up in quality and reputation.”

Vintage

Vintage

2014 was a beautiful vintage for the Napa Valley along the lines of the recent outstanding vintages of 2012 and 2103. Although California's continued drought brought another dry winter, the growing season started with a warm, dry spring and relatively early bud break. Summer temperatures remained mild and consistent with even, warm temperatures throughout. The overall quality and expressive fruit characteristics make this an outstanding vintage. Grapes for the 2014 Yates Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon were harvested on October 9 and 13.

Mount Veeder

Vineyard

This single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Yates Family Vineyard located in the Mount Veeder AVA of the Napa Valley. The Mount Veeder appellation is one of the most unique as it has one of the longest growing seasons but offers the lowest overall yields due to its mountainous nature. The Yates Family Vineyard is a 35-acre steep hillside vineyard planted by the Yates family in the early 1980's. At an elevation of over 1,100 feet, the vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and produces rich, intensely flavored fruit.
