Tasting Notes

The deep ruby color of this wine alludes to its depth and flavors of dark berries and spice. On the nose, the berries are immediately detectable and followed by hints of allspice and vanilla. Slightly less structured than a Cabernet Sauvignon but just as layered and satisfying, its tannins are firm yet plush. Enjoy now and at all times of the year with your favorite creamy, salty cheeses and hearty meat dishes.

Winemaking

Fruit for this vintage comes principally from the Bale Lane vineyard in St. Helena, where rocky Bale loam soils combined with a steady string of warm days leads to clusters that offer round and fruity expressions, perfect for Malbec, which thrives in both warm and cool climates. Fruit was optically sorted, selecting only the highest quality fruit for fermentation in stainless vessels. Fruit was allowed to ferment for up to 12 days with regular pump-overs to extract deep color and rich flavors. The wine was then gently pressed, racked and aged for 16 months in a combination of French (71%), American (24%), and Hungarian (5%) oak, 62% new.

Vintage

A near perfect season, welcomed after several tense vintages, began with abundant February rains followed by drying sun and weather that allowed for even flowering and bud break. The slightly later start was followed by consistently ideal weather. It turned a bit cool in August, mild in September, allowing fruit to evolve. Patience and careful attention to the vineyard was rewarded with fruit of excellent ripeness, well balanced tannins and complexity. Generally, normal to heavier fruit clusters were evident on the vine with great flavor intensity. On average, pick dates were two weeks later than normal.
