Winemaking

The grapes were hand harvested in the cool early morning during the month of October and transported to the winery, where they were optically sorted and sent to stainless and concrete tanks. After a pre-fermentation cold soak for gentle extraction of the delicate varietal nuances, the wines were fermented on skins for 15-20 days to achieve optimum tannin concentration. The wine was aged in French oak barrels for 18 months to increase the complexity of flavors and showcase pure fruit characters.

Vintage

In 2019, ample winter rains provided welcome saturation for the soils, followed by a cool spring. This delayed flowering and fruit set slightly, coming one to two weeks later. The long, warm summer saw very few extreme heat events, with foggy mornings setting the stage for vibrant and expressive wines. Continued mild temperatures extended the growing season, preserving freshness and finesse in the wines while teasing out beautiful complexity and balance.

Vineyard

Sterling was built on the love of classic Bordeaux-style varietal blends, inspiring this wine from our Napa Valley vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon for this wine comes from two vineyards in the Napa Valley, Petersen Ranch and Meigs Vineyard. The complex aspects of the terraced mountainsides create microclimates within the Petersen Ranch. The Cabernet Sauvignon planted here develops concentrated varietal expression in the well-drained, deep, rich loam of this vineyard’s 60 planted acres. Wines from this vineyard are very intense with weight and richness that give way to complex layers of aroma and flavor. This results in small, intensely concentrated fruit clusters that make deeply pigmented, assertive wines with full body and rich tannins. The Malbec and Petit Verdot for this wine come from the Bale Lane Vineyard in St. Helena, where rocky Bale loam soils combined with a steady string of warm days lead to clusters that offer round and fruity expressions, perfect for Malbec, which thrives in both warm and cool climates.
