Tasting Notes

Tasting Note

Rosé is now well established as a wine to enjoy year-round, both as an aperitif and with a wide array of popular foods. This Syrah Rosé is distinctive for its somewhat weightier style, with expressive aromas of ripe red fruit layered with floral notes of Rosé petal and violets. Flavors mimic the aromas, with notes of pomegranate and spice shining through.

Winemaking

Harry Hansen - Winemaker

Director of Winemaking Harry Hansen was raised in nearby Sonoma County. “One of my earliest memories of wine was the gallon jug of red wine that we always had at home. I would go with my father to a local winery, maybe in Kenwood or Healdsburg, to refill that jug and chit-chat with the winery proprietors. The aromas of those wines were always something attractive, somehow mysterious, but always memorable.”
Harry joined Sterling Vineyards and relocated to Napa Valley just before the 2011 Harvest. “The opportunity to join such a respected Napa Valley winery is exciting and a fantastic next step in my winemaking career. Sterling Vineyards is making some wonderful wines, and I look forward to taking that next step up in quality and reputation.”

Vintage

Vintage Note

After a damp late winter and spring, the 2019 California vintage started one to two weeks later than normal, followed by cool temperatures that allowed the grapes to mature gradually. Owing to the extended, cool growing season, wine grapes ripened slowly with full flavors and superb balance.

Vineyard

Syrah from the Winery Lake vineyard near the di Rosa Art Preserve provides fruit for this Rosé. The vineyard, nearby San Pablo Bay, has a touch of virus and struggles in the shallow, low-nutrient Haire and Diablo soils of heavy clay and volcanic rock from the Mayacamas range. A touch of minerality is present.
