2019 Sterling Vineyards Reserve Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

2019 Sterling Vineyards Reserve Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

2019 Sterling Vineyards Reserve Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes

True to its Russian River origins, the 2019 Sterling Vineyards Reserve Russian River Pinot Noir features expressive flavors of red fruit over a powdered minerality. Raspberry, strawberry, Bing cherry, and cranberry perfectly combine in the glass to create a profusion of flavor. The bold red fruit flavors are balanced by notes of oak spice and vanilla, enhanced by barrel aging. Minerality appears on second and third sip as a Russian River Valley fruit hallmark. Grippy, firm tannins and bright acidity enhance bold fruit flavors to create a long, memorable finish. Drink now or enjoy for 5 – 10 years.

Winemaking

Fruit for this reserve wine was 100% sourced from the Emeritus vineyard in Sebastopol farmed under the direction of Sonoma County legend Kirk Lokka, widely known for his stewardship of high-quality Pinot Noir. Soils are classic Goldridge sandy-loam common to the area, which is heavily impacted by marine influences from the Pacific, a scant 20 miles west. Sunny warm days are tempered by cooling fog, creating the perfect growing environment for Pinot Noir. The Pinot Noir grapes were handled very gently from vineyard to winery.  The hand-picked fruit was destemmed and optically sorted, then underwent a cold soak prior to fermentation in stainless open top fermenters to enhance color depth. After 14 days on skins, free run juice was drained and sent directly to barrel for malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged for eight months in 100% French oak (50% new) before it was bottled and allowed additional time to age to gain complexity before release.

Vintage

In 2019, ample winter rains provided welcome saturation for the soils, followed by a cool spring. This delayed flowering and fruit set slightly, coming one to two weeks later. The long, warm summer saw very few extreme heat events, with foggy mornings setting the stage for vibrant and expressive wines. Continued mild temperatures extended the growing season, preserving freshness and finesse in the wines while teasing out beautiful complexity and balance.
