Tasting Notes

The 2019 Winemaker’s Select Red Blend shows a beautifully crushed red velvet color in the glass accompanied by aromas of fresh blackberry, raspberry, and violet floral notes which interweave with rich, dark fruit flavors. On the palate, black currant, red cherry, and vanilla perfectly blend with dark chocolate and chai spiced tea, leading to a long, smooth finish. Full-bodied yet balanced and well-structured with polished, approachable tannins. Enjoy now, or age up to five years.

Winemaking

The grapes were hand harvested in the cool early morning during the month of October and transported to the winery, where they were optically sorted and sent to stainless and concrete tanks. After a pre-fermentation cold soak for gentle extraction of the delicate varietal nuances, the wines were fermented on skins for 15-20 days to achieve optimum tannin concentration. We chose to age the wine in a combination of French, American, and Hungarian oak barrels (48% new) for 19 months to increase the complexity of flavors and showcase pure fruit characters.

Vintage

After a damp late winter and spring, the 2019 California vintage started one to two weeks later than normal, followed by cool temperatures that allowed the grapes to mature gradually. Owing to the extended, cool growing season, wine grapes ripened slowly with full flavors and superb balance.

Vineyard

Sterling was built on the love of classic Bordeaux-style varietal blends, inspiring this wine from our Napa Valley vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon for this wine comes from two vineyards in the Napa Valley, Petersen Ranch and Diamond Mountain Ranch. The complex aspects of the terraced mountainsides create microclimates within the Petersen Ranch. The Cabernet Sauvignon planted here develops concentrated varietal expression in the well-drained, deep, rich loam of this vineyard’s 60 planted acres. Wines from this vineyard are very intense with weight and richness that give way to complex layers of aroma and flavor. Our Diamond Mountain Ranch lies west of Calistoga, where the 120 acres range in elevation from 1,700 to 2,000 feet, climbing the steep northern face of the Mayacamas Mountains. Nearly vertical slopes, austere soils, and dry farming stress the vines planted here, and low-vigor volcanic soils provide minimal nutrition. This results in small, intensely concentrated fruit clusters that make deeply pigmented, assertive wines with full body and rich tannins. The Petite Sirah for this wine comes from the Godward Ranch in Calistoga, situated at the very northern tip of the Napa Valley, which produces dark, deeply flavored fruit with exotic floral and spice characteristics.
